Top Twenty Soccer Money Clubs
The large accounting firm Deloitte has just released their annual report of the most profitable football clubs. One phrase seems to come to mind to summarize the list, "the rich keep getting richer."
The top nine have pretty much remained the same for the last eight years. Real Madrid again topped the list falling just short of 500 million Euros earned last year.
The list is compiled by gathering income streams from three key areas:
Matchday revenue, consisting of gate reciepts and season tickets
Broadcast revenue, including both international and domestic TV contracts
Commercial revenue, notably from sponsorship and merchandising
The Top 20 earned a combined 4.4 billion euros during the period, a figure which represents one quarter of the entire revenue accumulated in the European soccer market.
Schalke's 45 percent increase in sales made it the biggest climber, up six places to 10th with 302 million euros. The jump resulted from the German club advancing to the Champions League semifinals for the first time, Deloitte said.
Schalke didn't qualify for this season's Champions League after finishing 14th in the Bundesliga and instead is playing in the second-tier Europa League, where it's reached the first knockout round.
"The club's failure to qualify for Champions League football in 2011-12 means the club will not be able to maintain their lofty position in the Money League." Deloitte said
