NASCAR Seeks Return to "Rubbin Is Racin" Days
NASCAR has had a tough last couple of years. The economy combined with watered down competition and new safety rules have taken its toll on America's favorite racing sport. Even at fan favorite Bristol, which had always sold out, tickets were readily available for the first time in years.
2010 may prove to be the turnaround though as Danica Patrick is set to make her ARCA debut at Daytona and if all goes well may even move up to the Nationwide series later this year.
NASCAR has also relaxed the rules on bump drafting at their restictor plate tracks, Daytona and Talladega. I would just as soon see them eliminate the plates but this is a step to remove the "train effect" of the last several years. It was rumored that when Bill Eliott was turning the over 200MPH speeds at the large tracks that some drivers spoke up in a meeting in support of the plates. Dale Earnhardt Sr. allegedlly remarked that anyone that didn't want to race could buy a ticket and sit in the stands. Man I sure miss him. There will never be another like him.
The new wing will be replaced with the old spoiler. The new wing while better looking was never popular with drivers or crew chiefs.
A couple of rules aimed at cost cutting and to aid smaller teams include only allowing fifteen team members at the track and the lowering of unsealed engine usage from three races to two on the Nationwide series
All in all it should be an exciting year, especially if Danica proves to be a quick convert from the open wheel to the heavier stock car.
