Michael Oher: A Diamond In The Rough
April 26th 2009 00:30
Michael Oher is a millionaire today as he was drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens. That is not the story. His story is so unbelievable that it will take eyewitnesses to swear under oath that they are telling the truth.
Oher's father was murdered and his mother was addicted to cocaine, this may be the biggest reason that Michael had attended nine schools in eleven years and had failed constantly in school. He was in and out of foster schools until a friend enrolled him in Briarcrest Christian School. Even though he showed promise with both his size and talent as a football player he was not allowed to play football by the school administration. Also attending the school was the daughter of Sean and Leigh Anne Touhy. After learning of Michael's problems they invited him into their home and tutored him until he was able to play football. Michael flourished on and off the field, getting scholarship offers from big SEC schools like LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee. He decided to attend the Touhy's alma mater Mississippi. An investigation by the NCAA confirmed that the Touhys didn't direct Michael's decision. While at UM Oher would earn All-American honors before entering the NFL draft this year.
For more on Michael check out the book The Blind Side by Michael Lewis and be sure to catch the movie coming out in 2011
