Closer Look Sports - by Steve Gann

Mark Martin Close, But No Cigar

February 19th 2007 20:40
Mark Martin has always been a fan favorite, and that was never more true than yesterday at the Daytona 500. Martin looked poised to win his first Daytona 500. Martin has tried many times without much success and it looked like it was his time in the sun, or he thought it was.
With one lap to go things changed very quickly for Martin.

Kevin Harvick won won the Busch race saturday came on the outside lane and nipped Martin at the stripe. Harvick knew what an uproar this would cause as Martin was a fan favorite and Harvick became the villian one more time. Sometimes it's not meant to be. Maybe for Martin that is what the Daytona 500 is just not meant to be.
