Lingerie Football Equal Time
April 28th 2009 02:56
I monitor many different sports talk radio stations in my never ending quest to bring you the latest sports news. Today there was the usual rehash from the weekend's NFL draft plus one other universal topic.
The Lingerie Football League is expanding to ten teams this year.
Is this a legitimate sports topic? Women in lingerie playing two fifteen minute halves of Barbie football? These radio stations gave millions in free advertising to the silliest idea since the XFL.
Now one thing I have learned as a sportswriter is to never miss a good chance to give a deserving sport a shout out.
While the rest of the sports world is gushing over half naked beach babes tossing a ball around, I want to talk a little about a sport that I am learning to enjoy immensely...college softball.
Yes you heard me right..SOFTBALL.
Anyone who has read my previous work knows that I am a baseball traditionalist. I can't stand the pinging sound of an aluminum bat and I think the designated hitter rule is not only the worst idea in baseball but possibly in the history of the world.
Those two rules happen to be a part of NCAA softball, but yet I have fallen for the game.
My first introduction to the game was when Monica Abbott decided to play for the Tennessee Lady Vols. She was a machine on the mound even as a Freshman. With the closer pitcher mound it meant that she would have been throwing nearly 100 mph if she were in baseball.
The games go by at an incredible pace being limited to seven innings. With a dominate pitcher like Abbott on the mound one run could be huge. This is in direct contrast to the football like scores of college baseball.
They might not wear lingerie on the diamond but in my opinion they are a thousand times more entertaining to watch.
