Dale Earnhardt Jr: The Apple Fell Too Far
June 9th 2009 03:33
A week after his long time crew chief and cousin Tony Eury Jr. was scapegoated in the middle of this disappointing season, Dale Jr, slid two more spaces to number twenty in NASCAR's standings.
Even with his up and down career however, Jr. still remains by far the most popular driver in the Sprint Cup series. The "Junior Nation" is always well represented at each and every track.
Is it fair to criticize Dale Jr. for not living up to his famous father's legacy?
Well the answer is not a simple yes or no.
I don't think anyone has ever brought the aggressiveness to the race track as The Intimidator did. He remarked on more than one occasion that 2nd place was " Just the first loser." There is no question that Jr. has the talent to succeed, heck he was probably born in a race car, but the criticisms that I have heard from in the know track reporters is his lack of ambition. He loves to drive but has in the past not been willing to put the time in to test different setups and tracks.
It could be because he had an easier life financially when he was younger or simply because he just doesn't share the passion for driving as his late father. I'm not sure anyone has ever come to the track just to beat you like the elder Dale did race after race.
Whatever the reasons for his lack of championship success, Dale Jr. has generally steered clear of trouble and seems to be a genuine person who doesn't make excuses.
HIs one barrier would be too large for any driver to overcome.
