Best Baseball Film Ever?
April 26th 2009 19:11
Best baseball movie ever? That is the CNN iReport assignment. To a real baseball fan that is a nearly impossible task. It would be like walking up to a parent on the street and asking which of their children is the favorite. I have many baseball films and most have been watched at least a dozen times. If I was forced with the threat of waterboarding by CNN and the Commissioner of Baseball, I suppose I would respond this way.
But first a question.
Is Field Of Dreams considered a baseball film?
The story begins with a farmer who is facing financial difficulty and coming to terms with being a parent and husband.
So could it be considered a rural family drama?
The farmer begins hearing voices.
So could this be a film dealing with schizophrenia?
The farmer faces ridicule for hearing the voices.
So could this be a film about a social outcast?
The voice instructs the farmer to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield.
So could this be a film about giving in to peer pressure?
Shoeless Joe Jackson appears in the newly constructed field.
So could it be a new age film about the afterlife?
The voices continue and direct the farmer to kidnap a famous author.
So could it be a film about how desperation pushes people into a life of crime?
He helps a long dead Dr. who never got to bat in the major leagues?
So could it be called a redemption film?
He then risks losing the farm in foreclosure to keep the field.
So could it be considered a good versus evil film?
In the end he realizes that he might have built the field for a different reason than he first intended.
So could it be considered an irony film?
To me it is all of that and probably the greatest baseball film ever made.
