Baseball Lives In Greenfield, Ohio
May 23rd 2009 18:46
Like many small communities hit hard by the recent recession Greenfield, OH is facing uncertain times. The village just south of Columbus, has lost seventy percent of its manufacturing base, due mainly to the downturn in the auto industry. The one time city of over 5,000 and boyhood homes of country singers Johnny Paycheck and Brad Martin, is indeed fighting for its very survival .
In these times it would be easy to forget summertime activities like youth league baseball. A group of nine leaders wanted to make sure that the children would have something to do this summer and also give the adults some cheap entertainment. The group arranged for signups and cleaned up the field and raised 15,000 to guarantee the start of the season next week.
It is the hard times that reveal character. Hopefully a budding industry will see this small communities' determination and bring jobs to help insure its survival.
If you would like to help the youth league or just to thank them for caring about kids and sports, you can contact the city here.
