Andi Padilla: The 160cm Giant
May 21st 2009 04:48
California born Andi Padilla could have played softball for a handful of warm weather schools. So how did she end up in Fargo playing for the North Dakota State Bison? It was the opportunity to help build the program from Division II to the higher DI classification. Her story is similar to another California girl, Monica Abbott, who stands a foot taller than the 5'3' Padilla. Abbott would help send Tennessee to two trips to the Women's College World Series and put Knoxville on the women's softball map.
How did Padilla's decision turn out? The Bison not only made the NCAA tournament in their first year as a DI school, but are also just two wins away from the WCWS. Not bad for a school that only got to practice for four or five days outside the entire season. The school also had to endure flooding that closed the university for over a week. The team spent more time sandbagging than softballing during the record rains. In fact the Bison only got to play at home for two weeks the entire year.
The road to Oklahoma City will not be easy as the Bison will face defending champion Arizona State in a best of three series. I'll definitely be watching as softball has become one of my favorite sports. It's fast paced, and a single run could be the difference in a championship or a long trip home.
