A Ryno In The Land Of Dolly
April 24th 2009 02:33
Sevierville is a city of around 12,000 people in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Eastern Tennessee. The city is named for John Sevier, Tennessee's first governor but its most famous resident is Grammy winner Dolly Parton. Dolly has done many things for East Tennessee from giving free monthly books to all Tennessee children to bringing a top notch theme park(Dollywood) to the area.
The city also plays host to the Tennessee Smokies, a AA franchise of the Chicago Cubs. Sevierville, which serves as the gateway town between tourist havens Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg outbid much larger city Knoxville for the team ten years ago.
The little town that could can now claim Hall-Of-Famer Ryne Sandberg as a temporary home town citizen. Sandberg, who played fifteen seasons in the majors, is the new manager of the Smokies . He arrives after managing the Cubs A team in Peoria last year. If he manages the way he played then he will be back in the Ivy one day as the Skipper for the Cubs. Jim Frey once said of the perennial Gold Glover that if you could "Give him two weeks anywhere on the field and you will have one of the best players at that position in the Majors.”
He already has the Smokies in first place in their division of the Southern League this year. My trip to see them play the Carolina Mudcats will kick off my annual tour to visit as many Minor League stadiums as I can in that magical time known as baseball season.. If you know of a great stadium in your area that deserves a few words here feel free to comment on it here.
